Philippines: One year after Haiyan, Typhoon Hagupit makes landfall

Typhoon Hagupit is sweeping across the Philippines. Fortunately, this storm is weaker and less devastating than Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the country in November 2013.

Nevertheless, violent winds and heavy rainfall are wreaking havoc, especially in the eastern part of Samar Island. The region’s people had only just recovered from last year’s disaster, thanks in no small part to projects cofunded by Swiss Solidarity.

The generosity of the people of Switzerland has enabled Swiss Solidarity’s partner NGOs to rebuild and repair over 7,000 homes. Farmers, fishers and shopkeepers were also able to recover their livelihoods with the help of donations collected by the organisation.

Swiss Solidarity’s partner NGOs are still active on the ground and are ready to intervene quickly to support families dealing with the damage caused by Hagupit.
