Humanitarian crisis in Sudan

For over a year, Sudan has been devastated by a deadly conflict that has plunged the region into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises on record. Faced with this alarming situation, Swiss Solidarity is launching an urgent appeal for solidarity to step up its aid in Sudan and the region.

Catastrophic humanitarian situation

The people of Sudan are trapped by a deadly armed conflict, deliberately targeted in armed attacks and suffering the worst possible abuses. In addition to being subjected to intense violence, they are having to endure a critical lack of food, drinking water and medical care.

According to the United Nations, 24.5 million people are in need of urgent humanitarian aid, including food, drinking water, medical care and medicines.

What Swiss Solidarity is doing

Our partner NGOs are active in the region, providing vital humanitarian aid in Sudan, Chad and South Sudan. Caritas, Medair and Vétérinaires sans frontières are providing access to healthcare, food, drinking water and psychosocial support in Sudan and South Sudan, particularly in Sudan’s Darfur region. We are appealing for solidarity so that we can step up our aid and further alleviate the suffering endured by thousands of women, children and men in Sudan and in neighbouring countries where they have had to flee.

“Sudan must not be forgotten. While other crises make daily headlines, the suffering that the Sudanese people are enduring is indescribable and the humanitarian needs are immense. Our solidarity is urgent and vital for millions of women and children.”
Miren Bengoa, director of Swiss Solidarity

On the brink of famine: Over 18 million people affected

The people of Sudan are threatened by a famine that could become one of the world’s worst food crises if no action is taken. Over 18 million people are facing starvation. Women and children are the first to suffer from this crisis. As people fled the fighting, they were forced to abandon their farmland, and many fields became the scene of confrontations, leading to a dramatic drop in agricultural production, which only exacerbated the situation. Humanitarian aid must urgently be stepped up to prevent the situation from deteriorating further and becoming an even greater tragedy.

Mass population displacement

Since April 2023, the conflict has caused the largest internal population displacement in the world, with more than 10.8 million people forced to flee their homes.

The massive influx of Sudanese refugees into South Sudan and Chad – two already fragile countries – is exacerbating the security, food and climate challenges being faced by these regions. Even before the crisis, basic infrastructure and essential services were already inadequate, which is why humanitarian aid has become even more urgent and vital.

Save lives now

We are appealing for solidarity so that our Swiss partner NGOs can provide vital aid. To avoid a humanitarian disaster in Sudan, we need to act urgently.
