Campaign for Afghanistan raises nearly CHF 2 Million

Thanks to the solidarity of the Swiss people, we’ve raised over CHF 2 million since launching our fundraising campaign for Afghanistan on 26 August. However, the needs are still enormous, both within this already afflicted country and across its borders in neighbouring countries, where those most at risk are taking refuge. In response, we are renewing our appeal for donations

Now that the evacuations have come to an end, our campaign for Afghanistan has only gained importance. Thanks to the support of the Swiss people, we’ve raised almost CHF 2 million—thank you so much!

Catastrophic situation for the civilian population

Even before the Taliban took over, the needs in Afghanistan were enormous, with over a quarter of the population at risk of starvation due to drought, conflict and the coronavirus pandemic. With the Taliban having taken over, the entire system has now collapsed and the need for aid is more urgent than ever.

Delivering humanitarian aid

A number of our partner organisations are providing urgently needed aid on the ground in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, other partner NPOs are in the process of clarifying the situation, identifying the most urgent needs so that further relief work can start in the coming days. Our two partners Terre des hommes and Medair, which are active in the areas of food and healthcare, are providing assistance directly to those who need it most. Other partners supported by SwS and their networks, namely Médecins Sans Frontières and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), are active in the field of medical care.

Our partner organisations are independent and neutral, and work directly with people in need. No money is paid out to or through any authorities: your donation goes directly and specifically to the people most in need.

Delivering help in neighbouring countries

The aid measures of other partner organisations in countries bordering Afghanistan—specifically Solidar Suisse and Helvetas in Pakistan—are also being supported as refugee movements develop. The country has been taking in refugees from Afghanistan for many years, and preparations are underway to set up more refugee camps along the border with Afghanistan.

Given the desperate situation most Afghans are still in, your donations can help ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid matching the scale of the crisis, not only within Afghanistan but also in neighbouring countries.

Thanks for your support!
