Violent storm in the Neuchâtel mountains

The storm that hit the town of La Chaux-de-Fonds and its surroundings on July 24 2023 caused considerable damage, one was killed and forty people were injured. A wave of solidarity quickly set in. Affected people receive help through several citizens' initiatives.

In the first hours and days after the disaster, Swiss Solidarity was in contact with the local authorities of La Chaux-de-Fonds to evaluate the needs on the ground. However, in the case of natural disasters in Switzerland, Swiss Solidarity’s aid complements that provided by the public authorities and insurance companies. The Foundation only intervenes if the impact of an event justifies intervention and there are gaps in the system. In addition, Swiss Solidarity must be able to ensure that the donations collected are used responsibly.

In the present case, despite the scale of the damage, initial analyses indicate that the majority of the costs will be covered by insurance companies or other funds (such as public funds or fonds suisse – a specialized foundation for aid in the event of natural hazards).

Swiss Solidarity is continuing to monitor the situation closely and remains in contact with the local authorities to see how to support the affected people best.

General information and important links on the storm in the Neuchâtel mountains can be found on the La Chaux-de-Fonds website.

Since its foundation in 1946, Swiss Solidarity has been supporting vulnerable people in Switzerland. It is particularly active in helping people facing difficult circumstances. Swiss Solidarity is committed to the protection of children, the socio-professional integration of young people and the reintegration of homeless and marginalised people.
