These days mark the third anniversary of the conflict in Sudan. With more than 30 million people in need of humanitarian assistance and over 12 million displaced, Sudan is now facing the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. Despite extremely difficult conditions, Swiss Solidarity, together with its Swiss partner organisations, has been able to provide assistance to people affected by the war thanks to the solidarity shown in Switzerland. To date, the foundation has allocated CHF 7.3 million to humanitarian projects, reaching nearly 400,000 people since 2023. The aid has primarily focused on the most affected regions in Sudan, including Khartoum and Darfur, as well as border areas in Chad and South Sudan, where many refugees have sought protection.
Comprehensive humanitarian assistance
- In the health sector, more than 100,000 medical consultations have been carried out, and thousands of people – particularly children as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women – have been treated for acute malnutrition. At the same time, health centres have been strengthened and medical staff trained.
- Another key priority is access to clean water and hygiene. Dozens of water points have been built or rehabilitated, tens of thousands of people have been reached through hygiene awareness campaigns, and thousands of households have received hygiene kits.
- The most vulnerable families have also received direct support in the form of cash assistance, food or essential goods. Overall, more than 10,000 households have benefited from these measures.
- More than 25,000 people have received psychosocial support. Hundreds of survivors of violence, particularly women and girls, have received legal and medical assistance.
- Thousands of families have been supported in regaining their autonomy, for example through assistance in agriculture or fishing, helping them to sustainably improve their food security.
The projects have been implemented by Swiss partner organisations including Caritas, the Swiss Red Cross, Enfants du Monde, HEKS/EPER, Legal Action Worldwide, Medair, Médecins Sans Frontières, Save the Children Switzerland, Swissaid and Vétérinaires Sans Frontières.

A forgotten crisis with serious consequences
Despite the scale of humanitarian needs, the war in Sudan continues to receive very little public attention. This lack of visibility has direct consequences: reduced funding, limited access to aid, and a growing risk that the most vulnerable people – children, women and displaced persons – are left behind by international assistance.
“The war in Sudan is one of the largest humanitarian crises in the world today – and at the same time one of the most neglected. While other conflicts are in the spotlight, this one often lacks attention and therefore funding. For those affected, this invisibility can have life-threatening consequences."
