Major damage and urgent humanitarian needs

Many people have lost their lives, while thousands more are injured or still missing. The destruction is immense. Homes, roads, hospitals and other essential infrastructure have been severely damaged. The disaster has struck a country that was already deeply weakened, where many people were living in highly precarious conditions even before the earthquakes.

Humanitarian needs are enormous: medical care, emergency shelter, safe drinking water, food and essential goods are urgently needed.

Our ongoing response

Our Swiss NGO partners are already providing emergency assistance on the ground: medical care, safe drinking water, food, essential goods and access to safe shelter. We remain in constant contact with them to ensure that the assistance is adapted as closely as possible to the actual needs on the ground.

Depending on how the situation evolves, our support may also include longer-term measures to help affected people regain prospects for the future.

National Day of Solidarity

On the National Day of Solidarity on Thursday, 2 July, Switzerland mobilised for the people affected in Venezuela and sent a strong message of solidarity. With the support of SRG SSR and private radio stations, volunteers and well-known personalities collected donation pledges throughout the day in the telephone centres in Zurich, Geneva, Lugano and Chur. In total, 10,032,254 francs were raised for humanitarian aid.

“The disaster striking Venezuela at a time of instability and hardship is deeply concerning. The affected regions are densely populated, and both housing and essential infrastructure are fragile. We fear that many people will require urgent assistance and call on the people of Switzerland to show their solidarity.”

Two powerful earthquakes, among the most violent to hit Venezuela in more than a century, struck the country on 24 June. Although the full extent of the disaster remains uncertain, initial assessments point to a very heavy human toll that could reach into the thousands of deaths. In response to this major disaster, Swiss Solidarity is launching a nationwide fundraising campaign in support of the affected population.
