Flash Flood in Nepal
A devastating flash flood has killed several hundred people, destroyed entire villages in northern Nepal and caused extensive damage. Hundreds of people are still missing or remain out of contact. Thousands of households urgently need assistance. Swiss Solidarity is calling for solidarity with the affected population.

Widespread destruction and challenging rescue operations
On 26 August, an exceptionally severe flash flood struck northern Nepal near the border with Tibet. A powerful surge of water then swept more than 100 kilometres along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers, reaching the Narayani.
Masses of water, mud and debris swept away entire villages, destroyed homes, roads and bridges, and damaged hydropower plants and other essential infrastructure. Many communities remain difficult to access, hampering efforts to search for missing people and deliver assistance to the affected population.

Thousands of people urgently need assistance
The full extent of the damage is still being assessed. Initial estimates suggest that around 10,000 households require immediate assistance.
Many families have lost their homes, livelihoods or access to essential services. The most urgent needs include emergency shelter, safe drinking water, food, hygiene items and other essential supplies, as well as access to medical care. Search and rescue operations are continuing in parallel.
Our response
Several of our Swiss partner organisations, including Adra, Terre des hommes, the Swiss Red Cross and Helvetas, have been working in Nepal for many years. They are already responding on the ground or preparing emergency interventions.
Thanks to the donations received, Swiss Solidarity supports the emergency assistance provided by its Swiss partner organisations. Depending on how the situation develops, this support may also include longer-term measures to help the hardest-hit families rebuild their livelihoods.
