09.07.2025

Ten years after the earthquake in Nepal, your support continues to have a lasting impact on those affected. The more than 32 million Swiss francs in donations that we have collected thanks to you have enabled homes, schools and health centres to be rebuilt. Find out how your help continues to bring hope on the ground.

On 25 April 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, causing the country's worst natural disaster in 80 years. Countless houses collapsed, part of Nepal's cultural heritage was destroyed and entire villages were wiped out. Ten years after the disaster, your solidarity continues to make a difference.

The catastrophe in figures

• More than 9,000 people lost their lives

• Around 22,000 people were injured

• More than 600,000 homes have been destroyed

Many families have lost everything, in cities such as Kathmandu and especially in mountainous regions that are difficult to access.

Immediately after the disaster, Swiss Solidarity launched an appeal for donations. The solidarity shown by the Swiss population was remarkable: a total of 32.5 million Swiss francs were collected, including more than 11 million on the national day of solidarity on 5 May 2015.

Thanks to your donations, 34 projects have been carried out in collaboration with 11 Swiss NGO partners and 8 local organisations.

• 22% was spent on emergency aid

• 71% enabled long-term reconstruction

• 7% was used for disaster prevention support and training

• 97% are satisfied with the earthquake-resistant homes built

• 91% are satisfied with the new irrigation systems

• 99% of pupils are satisfied with school buildings

• 83% believe that financial support has reached the most vulnerable people

Ten years after the earthquake, the solidarity of the people of Switzerland is still alive in every school, every village well and every family that has found a new home. Thank you so much for your support. Your donations brought hope to the people affected by the earthquake and their effects are still being felt today.
