One week after the disaster, the toll continues to rise: more than 1,000 people have lost their lives and over 4,000 are still missing. More than 90,000 people may have been affected. In the hardest-hit regions, thousands of families have lost their homes, their belongings, and in some cases, their livelihoods. Furthermore, access to certain communities remains difficult.
The emergency is far from over
The most immediate needs are shelter, access to clean drinking water, food, and medical care. The precarious conditions in which many displaced families are living also raise fears of an increase in diseases linked to contaminated water and a lack of sanitation facilities. Moreover, the situation remains unstable, and unfortunately, further flooding cannot be ruled out.
Ernst Lüber, Director of Programs at Swiss Solidarity, emphasizes: "Thanks to the solidarity of the Swiss public and the fieldwork of our partners, we can support families in this acute emergency, but also accompany them so they can spend the winter in the warmth, rebuild their livelihoods, and allow children to return to school quickly. The goal is to help them return to a normal life as much as possible."
Complementary expertise to meet diverse needs
In the face of this type of disaster, Swiss Solidarity's strength relies on the expertise and complementarity of its network of Swiss partner NGOs. In Nepal, several of them have been present for decades, while others are currently deploying a humanitarian response. These include ADRA, Caritas, CBM, the Swiss Red Cross, Helvetas, Save the Children, and Terre des hommes.
Alongside their local partners, they are working actively to meet the most urgent needs. They are distributing food, clean drinking water, and essential goods, as well as providing financial support. They are also ensuring access to emergency shelters, healthcare, and psychosocial support for those traumatized by the disaster.
Solidarity remains essential
Over 4 million francs have already been raised. Swiss Solidarity thanks the Swiss public who responded to its appeal. Given the scale of the needs, the mobilization must continue.
