Devastating flash floods in Nepal: Swiss Solidarity launches an appeal for the affected population

28.08.2026

In response to the scale of the destruction and humanitarian needs caused by the devastating flash floods that have struck Nepal, Swiss Solidarity is launching a fundraising appeal today to support the affected population.

The disaster has already claimed nearly 500 lives, while hundreds of people remain missing. Entire villages have been devastated, homes, roads and bridges swept away, and many communities remain difficult to access. According to initial estimates, around 100,000 people have been affected, while more than 10,000 households are in need of immediate assistance. The situation also remains unstable: a natural dammed lake has formed upstream, and authorities fear that a sudden breach could trigger another flash flood.

Several of Swiss Solidarity’s Swiss partner organisations, including Helvetas, the Swiss Red Cross, Save the Children and Terre des hommes, are active in Nepal and report an extremely precarious situation, with the human toll and the extent of the damage likely to rise further. They are already responding or preparing emergency interventions to address the most urgent needs, including shelter, safe drinking water, food, essential supplies and healthcare.

Swiss Solidarity is calling on people across Switzerland to show their solidarity and help its partner organisations provide rapid assistance to those most severely affected.
