Announcement of ‘daily pauses’ in Gaza – the humanitarian situation remains catastrophic

28.07.2025

The humanitarian situation in Gaza is dramatic. The announced establishment of humanitarian corridors and daily ceasefires could enable the delivery of vital aid. However, given the scale of the need and the severity of the crisis, these measures are far from sufficient.

What we are currently witnessing in Gaza is an unspeakable tragedy.

Our partner organisations, which have been working on the ground for years, are reporting shocking scenes: starving children, helpless mothers, bombed hospitals, displaced families without any support. The humanitarian aid system has been deliberately dismantled by the Israeli authorities in favour of a chaotic military apparatus that endangers the Palestinian population and fails to meet their needs.

Announcement of ceasefires and humanitarian corridors

The recently announced opening of humanitarian corridors and daily ceasefires is a long-awaited sign. In such a desperate situation, any measure that enables the delivery of food, water and medical aid is welcome. Nevertheless, these isolated measures are far from sufficient to address the catastrophic situation. Malnutrition has now reached such an advanced stage that children need not only food and water, but also medical care in order to survive. Furthermore, the actual implementation of the announced measures remains unclear.

Increased aid from Swiss Solidarity

Our partner organisations are prepared to intensify their efforts. However, an effective humanitarian response requires a permanent ceasefire and rapid, unhindered humanitarian access, as stipulated by international humanitarian law.

‘We want to step up our aid in Gaza. The daily ceasefires could provide the population with much-needed relief – through the delivery of medicines, food and fuel. But we remain cautious about their actual impact.’

Miren Bengoa

Director Swiss Solidarity

We are continuing to monitor the situation closely and are actively supporting our partner organisations in adapting and expanding their aid. Several of them – including

Médecins du Monde, HEKS, Médecins Sans Frontières, Terre des hommes and Frieda – are working on the ground. They are providing medical care, distributing food, offering psychosocial support and financial assistance to the affected civilian population.

Swiss Solidarity will remain committed for as long as necessary and will adapt its support to changing humanitarian needs.

Please donate to help the people of Gaza. Thank you very much!
