A population exhausted by an extreme winter
Four years after Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine, the human toll continues to rise: 2025 was the deadliest year for civilians since 2022. The traumatised population endures daily bombardments. Millions of children have been out of school since the start of the conflict, the health system is under pressure and many families have been forced to flee several times.
Adding to the violence of war this year is an extremely harsh winter. Repeated attacks on energy infrastructure have left thousands of families with only a few hours of electricity per day. Surviving in temperatures of -17°C, without heating and in damaged homes, has become a reality for thousands of families.
Today, 10.8 million people are in need of humanitarian aid in Ukraine. While needs continue to grow, international funding is declining and the situation shows no signs of improvement. In response to this situation, Swiss Solidarity is renewing its appeal for solidarity among the Swiss population.
An exceptional mobilisation that is making a difference
Since 2022, the Swiss population has shown exemplary solidarity. With 140 million Swiss francs raised, this is the second largest collection in Swiss Solidarity's history.
Thanks to this mobilisation, more than 7 million people have already received aid. The donations have funded 151 humanitarian projects, mainly in Ukraine, particularly in the most affected regions in the east of the country.
In concrete terms, the humanitarian aid provided by Swiss Solidarity's NGO partners makes it possible to:
- provide direct financial assistance to families to cover their basic needs;
- repair damaged homes in preparation for winter;
- support hospitals and medical teams;
- offer psychological support to traumatised people, in particular safe spaces for children;
- ensure continuity of education for children;
- restore access to drinking water and carry out mine clearance operations.
‘Four years after the start of the war, the needs remain immense and the population is exhausted. Swiss solidarity has already provided vital aid to millions of people. But even today, every donation counts in enabling families to heat their homes, receive medical care, survive and keep hope alive,’ says Miren Bengoa, Director of Swiss Solidarity.
